What a brilliant holiday we had. Three brothers and their wives in a self-catering cottage could have been a recipe for disaster; however, it turned out to be a magnificent success.
We stayed in
Half Moon House, Dervaig. It's a modern house with two double bedrooms (master with en-suite and dressing area), a twin bedroom and family bathroom on the ground floor. Upstairs is a well appointed kitchen with dining area and a huge lounge with balcony, looking out to the sea. (There are a couple of extra z-beds, so a family of 8 could be accommodated.)
We travelled to Mull via Oban, taking the Calmac Ferry. This journey takes 45 minutes and there are several crossings throughout the day. In the high season, booking is recommended. Make sure you turn up at least half an hour before your departure time (Calmac require this). The ferry arrives at Craignure. Driving to Dervaig, you are lulled into a false sense of security by the fine road to Salen - but you're soon testing your driving skills on single-track roads with passing places.
Because we had great facilities in the house, we only ate out once - at the Bellachroy Hotel in Dervaig. Boy was it busy! Thankfully we had arrived fairly early and were seated straight away in the restaurant. There are many other excellent eating places in Mull, many of which were also very busy. Local produce is the order of the day and the quality of the food is excellent.
